Decorating Tips if Your Favorite Season is Fall
October 5, 2018
Summer is a welcomed season for most, but for many, fall is their favorite time of the year. Yes, school is back in session and days lingering by the water are coming to an end, but fall brings with it vibrant leaves, pumpkin-flavored everything, cozy sweaters, and flavorful beverages that warm you from the inside out.
Once it starts getting cooler outside, it's also a great time to start decorating your new home. But don’t just add in those pops of maroon and orange in the fall. If it’s really your favorite season, decorate your custom floor plan to incorporate aspects of fall all year long.
Living Spaces
While summer is all about getting outside, as the weather cools down, you tend to move inside. An open floor plan can work wonderfully to provide you with enough room for hosting get-togethers without your home feeling cramped. Or, if your get-togethers tend to be quieter affairs, a more traditional floor plan may work better for your family. Your designer can help you decide what would suit your needs better.
A comfortable family room is the perfect space for watching Monday Night Football with friends or a Hocus Pocus with family. If you’re moving into a new home, consider whether the furniture you already have would suit the space. A new couch or a reupholstered chair might help to bring the room together even better.
How about a floor plan that includes a fireplace? This makes for a cozy, welcoming addition to your family room that provides warmth and a place where you gather or spend an evening with a good book and a mug of warm cider.
Do you enjoy taking walks through the woods in the fall? Feature the beauty of the Pacific Northwest’s forests by adding in wooden accents to your home. You could do this through permanent features, such as exposed beams or cabinets. Or you could select wooden furniture items, like chairs and shelves. You can also incorporate Pacific Northwest style by choosing more unique items, such as a coffee table made of reclaimed wood made by a local artist.
Another easy way to change the look of the room with little effort is to add throw pillows to couches and chairs. These can be switched out seasonally to give a fresh feel to the space. You can also drape cozy blankets on your couches to help them look even more inviting as colder weather sets in.
Dining Room and Kitchen
One of the best parts about fall is getting together with people you love and sharing meals together.
If you have a large family or love to entertain, you may be interested in custom floor plans that feature a dining room big enough to bring everyone together. If you don’t already have a dining table you love, you can find one made of a warm-toned wood that would fit the room perfectly.
Then, when fall arrives (or anytime your heart desires), further decorate with seasonal centerpieces made of items like gourds, leaves, and candles, which work perfectly to make the space feel festive.
If cooking and sharing food is important, consider custom floor plans that give you a large gourmet kitchen. This will provide you with ample counter space, no matter what the occasion; Thanksgiving dinner, a World Series viewing party, or just a get-together with friends. An island gives you even more room to cook and adding appliances like multiple ovens and a large fridge means you’ll never run out of space.
You can keep the colors of fall in your kitchen year-round through your choice of materials. You may be drawn toward wooden cabinets if you’re using wood accents in other parts of your home and granite or marble countertops come in a wide array of colors and patterns. By working with your home designer to customize your kitchen, you can find complementary materials in tones that you’ll love all year, but especially as the fall approaches.
Paint
Paint is a great way to add a lot of color to a room. If your style is on the wild side, go for a more prominent hue. This is a bold choice, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Shades of deep red, mustard yellow, or even a rich orange can be sophisticated and work well in the right space. You may also go for a feature wall if you’re not ready for your whole room to be painted such a bold color.
If you’d rather have a more calming atmosphere throughout your home, use neutral colors. Many neutral paints have blue undertones, but there are others that are on the warm side, reminiscent of fall colors. Warm neutrals can also accentuate the tones in certain woods, like oak and cherry.
Outside of the Home
Even if you think brightly colored paint might be too much for the inside of your home, consider using it outside. A cheerful red or orange front door might be the perfect way to add autumn character to your home year-round. Any door can also be made more festive with a seasonal wreath.
Landscaping is another great way to decorate your home. One of the best parts of fall is seeing the colors of the leaves change. By adding trees and bushes with brilliant autumn colors, such as Japanese and red maples.
If you enjoy cooking, plant fruit trees that will give you a yearly treat. The Pacific Northwest has an excellent climate for apple and pear trees. Not only will these trees add visual interest to your yard, but they can provide you with the anticipation of getting to make homemade apple pies and pear cobbler.
Trees will make your house more inviting no matter what the season. And as an added benefit, they will shade your home, keeping your abode cooler in the summer. As an added bonus, this will also lower your energy bill.
Of course, decoration doesn’t have to go as far as permanent landscaping. A simpler option is to purchase buckets of flowers that do well in cooler weather. Mums are a fall favorite and you can easily put a few buckets outside your house to add color.
Add classic fall charm to your front yard by placing pumpkins or lanterns along your front walkway. Pumpkins and gourds also make great additions to your front porch. If your home includes a front porch swing, you could also swap out the cushions for ones with more seasonal colors and add a blanket for cool nights.
